My name is Penny Rodie, I’m 36 and am originally from the UK but now live in Berlin. I studied acting at drama school but have ended up in a completely different field!

What do you do and for how long?

I’m a database consultant for charities, and have been doing this for around 6 years now. I help non-profits automate processes to save time, as well as track and report on their work so that they can demonstrate their impact to funders.

What cause or charity do you support?

The charities I’m currently working with include a social mobility charity called Career Ready, a network of food banks Your Local Pantry, a debt relief advice organisation, Grace Advocacy  and a not-for-profit consultancy called Real Systems who work with organisations tackling homelessness. Outside of work I’m also passionate about reducing the impact of the climate crisis.

Who are your influences?

I’m influenced by people who stay true to their values, especially if it comes with some form of personal cost to them. When I see people living with such integrity it inspires me to try to do the same.

Your favourite quote :

More Life. The Great Work begins!’

These are the last two lines of my favourite play, Angels in America by Tony Kushner. In the context of the play, it’s spoken by a character living with AIDS in the early 1990s, referring to the ongoing political struggles for queer people’s lives to be treated with worth and dignity. More broadly, I see it as about finding hope and joy even in challenging times, and committing to the work of trying to make the world a better place. I’m planning to get it tattoo-ed on my arm as a permanent reminder!
